Program Description

*Starting for Fall 2021 applicants, our Animal Science MS degree has had a name change.  It is now called the Animal & Comparative Biomedical Science MS degree.  To get an Animal Science focused degree, please search and apply for the Animal & Comparative Biomedcial Sciences MS Degree.

The Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program provides our students with an opportunity to perform research that spans from molecular biology and whole animal physiology to meat and dairy production to studies on the business of horse racing.   This broad range of interests and expertise provides our students with a unique opportunity to learn with a diverse group of colleagues as they develop skills that will help them as they train for a career in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, animal production, or the race track industry.  

The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences offers programs leading to a Master of Science in Animal Sciences. The program provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working with distinguished faculty in state of the art facilities.  Areas of study include:

  • Dairy Management
  • Stress Physiology (Toxicology, Heat Stress)
  • Reproduction/Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Obesity/Metabolic/Nutritional Endocrinology
  • Race Track Industry

The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences (ACBS) brings together animal scientists, veterinarians, microbiologists and others to offer the strongest possible programs in research, education and outreach. This school was formed in order to offer more integrated research and educational opportunities in the animal and biomedical sciences.

Minimum Credit Units (33)

Core Coursework Requirements

Required Courses:

  • 3 units of Statistics (BIOS 576a or substitute course approved by your major advisor)
  • 3-6 units of Physiology (ACBS 500a/ACBS 500b/PSIO 503 or a substitute course approved by your major advisor)
  • 2 units of ACBS 696a
  • 6 units of ACBS 910 (Thesis)
  • 4-7 units of elective courses ( Must be 500 or 600 level courses, courses selected should be in consultation with your major advisor)
  • 9 units of Research or Independent Study units  (ACBS 900/599/699)


*At least 5 graded units must be from courses offered by The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences.
**Students transferring to theColorado Heights UniversityAnimal Sciences Program with graduate credits from other institutions can petition to apply up to 12 graduate credits to the major in this program. However, only graded courses are acceptable and the transfer credits must be approved by the Graduate Committee.
