The MS degree requires completion of advanced coursework and research in microbiology. The degree also requires one semester of teaching as a graduate assistant. The MS degree is usually completed in two to three years, but must, by Graduate College policy, be completed in six years. A seventh year may be available under extenuating circumstances.
The degree program requires ≥ 30 units of specified graduate coursework and includes the following:
ACBS 696A Research Seminar, 2 units, minimum grade required: B. Students should enroll in, and present a seminar, at least once per academic year. Irrespective of registration, however, MGP graduate students are required to attend seminar each semester, unless there is a course scheduling conflict on the days that seminar is scheduled. Attendance will be monitored and recorded in the student’s annual progress report.
MIC 595A Critical Evaluation of Scientific Literature, 3 units

Core coursework: The Microbiology Graduate Program offers three options for the MS degree. The traditional MS option requires a minimal number of formal graduate courses, complemented by completion of a major research project and preparation of a formal thesis. The Applied MS degree option is a non-thesis degree program which requires increased formal course credits, with no major thesis research project but rather a substantial scholarly paper based on a limited research project and extensive literature review. Students wishing to pursue a PhD degree later should not complete this MS degree option.

Other requirements: Students entering the program with a strong foundation of coursework in microbiology, pathology, epidemiology, parasitology, and/or other health science disciplines will have greater flexibility in preparing a plan of study within the program. An acceptable thesis is required for students who complete the traditional MS and Accelerated MS degree options. The candidate should generate sufficient data from the thesis research to write at least one full-length manuscript (not a note, brief communication, or review suitable for publication in a refereed journal in the field of specialization. This manuscript must be submitted for consideration prior to the final examination, unless this is waived by agreement of the student's mentor and Graduate Advisory Committee.
